Andrew Goodwin's Theory

1. Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics.
E.G A stage performance video is a typical for a metal video, a dance routine typical for a boy/ girl band.  Also, in a rap video a group of women in bikini's and flashy sports cars.

Kings of Leon are a famous band which has a very big fan base. Usually bands with big fan bases use stage performances. However this music video also has the 'two world' aspect which is common in many music videos.

2. There are frequent references to the notion of looking and the voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
E.G men and women being portrayed seductively or eye contact with the camera. Props are also used.

Beyonce is known not only for her music but also for the way she looks. Her music videos are very seductive and she usually wears minimal clothing. Some may say she has become known for this and her fans now expect it in a positive way.

3. There is a succinct relationship between music and visuals.

Vance Joy has created a direct link between each lyric and the visual. Usually this wouldn't be interesting to watch however the ambiguity of the woman singing with her make-up running creates an ambiguous element which makes it extremely interesting to watch. Also because it is so different and unlike anything out there already the audience is drawn to it.

4. The record label assigned to an artist usually has particular demands which often include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist.

5. There is often intertextual references. (films, TV programmes etc.)

This video by the Neighbouthood draws on the 1950's woman and shows her going insane which may be showing the inner feelings of how they felt back then.
