Audience Feedback (2)

After adding in our narrative we wanted to collect some feedback to make sure the message came across well enough and if the ending was powerful enough. The ending is what we wanted to make really dramatic and slightly ambiguous in order to  leave the audience shocked and slightly confused to encourage them to re watch the video.
As the lake was very shallow we didn't like the effect of actually showing the protagonist in the lake therefore thought it may work well to have the jump in slow motion and then sped up to an empty lake. We got some feedback from the AS class as they have an informed idea of media elements but have not seen the struggles along the way therefore we thought they'd be able to give a non bias opinion.

Many of them understood the ending and liked the concept which was a relief. They also mentioned many of our editing techniques that they liked and the mixture between performance and narrative. However many said that the ending may be a bit too abrupt and should be faded out a little bit which is easily fixed and that is what we will be working on fixing up until the deadline.

Band Name

We chose 'static' as our song name however when Tara and I were adding the credits to our final video we were unsure about the name. We looked at the lyrics to see if anything stood out to us but nothing did. We then thought, because our video has a lot of sadness and loneliness in the narrative I put 'sadness' into thesaurus to see if anything cool came up. I found 'dysphoria' which i thought sounded appealing and fits with our genre well.

However, we liked this name for our band name and decided to keep 'static' as the song name and album name. So, we are now Dysphoria.

Editing

ITara and I edited all of this morning and again after school when Emily joined us. We have been sticking to the schedule as much as possible which i feel has motivated us to get it done. The new footage has fitted in nicely to our video and I think a narrative was definitely needed as it just adds that something extra to the video and makes it more interesting for the audience as it gives them something to think about.

Target Audience

Understanding the target audience is crucial when creating media texts. As our song fits into the indie rock genre i looked into what the audience for this genre is.
The occupational grouping of my audience is that the majority are males between 15-24. However as we have a female singer this will be extended to females too.
Our target audience are most likely to be students as the age range of 15-24 are the peak studying period.

Our target audience will like indie rock, alternative music genres as our song is part of this genre. However they also have a interest in more intense rock music as the music video has similar conventions to these music video conventions.

Indie rock music is usually dark and troubled which in some cases may be related to.

I think our video fits this well as we have added a suicidal element to it conforming to the darkness that usually reflects the indie music genre.
Horror/thriller films may also be favoured by our target audience because of the dark tone of our video. This is the social grouping of our video.

Filming Schedule

As it's a week until the deadline organising our time wisely is essential for hitting that A grade.
We've set out a filming schedule to know exactly who and where we will be during all of our free lessons.

So, today we stuck to the schedule and Ciara, Tara and I went out and filmed in Forty Hall as Emily couldn't make it. We had a successful (very cold) trip. We went straight back to school to upload and edit for the rest of the afternoon and until we got kicked out of school. We all thought there was a big transformation to the video even after adding a few of the shots from the new footage. We are all feeling much more positive and eager to stick to the schedule and meet the deadline with something we are proud of.
Here are some photos from the day...

Audience Feedback

We asked our media class to give feedback on our video so far as we felt they had an informed idea of the criteria and would be able to give constructive criticism.

Looking at our audience feedback we saw a recurring issue that it was 'repetetive' and 'needed something extra' which we decideed to add in after so many people suggesting it.
We sat down as a group and decided what the extra something could be.

We wanted to portray our protaganist as being trapped as this is what our lyrics presented to us.
We came up with the idea to show her committing suicide by jumping/walking into a lake. We were inspired when we heard about how author Virginia Woolf killed herself by putting stones in her pockets and walking into a lake.

Here are the shots that we filmed today.

Iconography/Props

We have used very subtle iconography so the audience can sub consciously interpret them and give an extra element to the protagonist/artist that isn't explicitly shown in our performance video.

Firstly, the graffiti. As well as graffiti showing a cool and indie setting for the performance to take place. It may also show some voyeurism as the mode of looking is a key theme in our video. It is also shown through our use of the mirror used for the majority of our lip syncing shots. The still shot of the artist looking at the mirror represents a sense of reflection or self reflection which creates the melancholic tone along with the lighting which is the feeling we hope audiences will understand (stuart hall).

Cutting Down The Song

Whilst editing the video we were really thinking about how to edit down the song as it is 4.34 which is extremely long and with our time limit it would be a tremendous amount of stress on top of what we're already feeling. So, at first we wanted to cut out a middle section of the song however we tried it out and realised that it was really julty and just that it wouldn't work.

In the end we decided that to cut it at 3 minutes would be perfect as there is a slow part that follows a climactic part of the song allowing us to create a dramatic and memorable ending.

Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work

Two Door Cinema Club are an alternative/indie band. This music video follows many of the conventions of their genre one being the nature theme which is what we have incorporated in our own music video.

Existing Media Texts

While looking at existing music videos of our genre we found a convention to be nature and therefore we wanted to incorporate this theme into our video. These are the shot types that we took inspiration from while in the making of our music video.

They are from the videos of Lorde and Two Door Cinema Club which are two well known artists of the indie genre.

Convention of Indie Digipak

  • As indie music is very strange and alternative most digipaks are designed around the music and are strange and alternative.

  • They tend not to feature the band and have pictures and colours which help the digpak stand out.
  • If the digipak does have the band on it tends to be in a cartoony way.

  • Also she only feature the band name and not the title of the albumtext is usually strange and different.
